Neva Howard, MD, will step back from her role as Director of Learning Innovations for the UNC School of Medicine. She helped create and launch several programs to support students and impacted the lives and careers of hundreds of students. She will move to Colorado where she will work as a pediatric emergency physician.
Neva Howard, MD, will step back from her role as Director of Learning Innovations for the UNC School of Medicine. Howard will move with his family to Colorado to take up a position as a pediatric emergency physician.
Howard joined the medical school at the School of Medicine in 2013 after completing his pediatric fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill. During her time at the faculty, she helped develop and launch several important programs and supported hundreds of medical students.
“It’s hard to overstate the incredible impact Dr. Howard has had on the lives of so many students. She has been an inspirational role model, coach, teacher and educator to hundreds of students,” said Christina Shenvi, Director of the Office of Academic Excellence. Georgette Dent, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, wrote, “Neva Howard has been a spectacular colleague, 100% dedicated to the success of UNC SOM students. She does this with exuberance and commitment, and an approach that is inclusive, supportive and collaborative.
As a member of the Office of Academic Excellence, Howard was instrumental in creating a system to promote student success on the Step 1 licensing exam. She then led the development of the Carolina MED EXCEL program, a one-year program to develop and support underrepresented medical students.
Howard has made outstanding contributions to the UNC School of Medicine and has been recognized in many ways, including as a Whitehead Lecturer, with the post of Distinguished Teaching Professor of Alumni of Medicine at UNC Academy of Educators, as a recipient of the SOM Professor Graduation Award, and AOA Induction.
