Som Satsangi, SVP and Managing Director, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, India, says technology can solve a wide range of problems and increase efficiency, which will play a greater role in governance transparency

DQ: How is HPE helping India adopt Smart Governance to streamline both governance and business practices?

Sum satsangi: HPE actively supports the Digital India and Smart Cities mission projects and partners with several PSUs to enable the digital transformation of their organizations. We are now witnessing the adoption of several digital technologies such as IoT, AI-ML, analytics, etc. at scale in smart cities and other projects and HPE provides unique, innovative and use-case specific solutions from its portfolio of hardware, IP software. as well as design, consulting and integration services.

HPE has in fact set up India’s first cloud-based integrated command and control center for Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. (BSCDCL). This center enabled the monitoring and administration of utilities and citizen services of multiple cities in each of the cities through a central cloud and enabled the monitoring of cities statewide from a view central control.

Additionally, our cloud and IoT enabled Covid testing labs and OPD centers have collectively facilitated over 5,00,000 patient visits and set a benchmark in India’s tech-enabled healthcare ecosystem. while supporting government efforts to respond to Covid.

Our High Performance Computing (HPC) systems have enabled some of the renowned institutes such as Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune; Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore; Tata Institute for Basic Research (TIFR), Mumbai; Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur). The research center with HPE HPC facilities includes the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida. HPE solutions for data, compute and applications enable several smart government initiatives.

DQ: Which technologies will play a major role in effective and transparent governance?

Sum satsangi: Technology can solve a wide range of problems and increase efficiency, which will play a greater role in transparent governance. Looking at data usage, data integration across verticals, innovative service delivery models, and cross-industry collaboration, we’ll see technologies like data, data analytics, AI-ML , high performance computing, cloud, etc., help governance to be agile. and efficient.

The Indian government has already taken steps to use digital infrastructure to solve India’s problems in delivering services without presence, paper and cash. The development of the CoWIN app, digital vaccination certificates in DigiLocker, the Aarogya Setu app are great examples. Similarly, other applications in the Indian stack such as the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) provide access to digital documents including driver’s license, vehicle registration, academic records of issuers origin and eKYC to establish their identity electronically and without paper. Therefore, the transition to emerging technologies such as the use of AI, ML, data analytics, 5G, augmented reality and the Internet of Things is already paving the way for the effectiveness and quality of governance in India.

The adoption of these technologies has already had a huge impact on smart city projects by managing traffic to reduce pollution, forecasting weather data and efficient processes as more and more people connect through devices. smart and smart workplaces. The key is to make these technologies available to every citizen of the country and to ensure effective governance.

DQ: How should companies and startups participate?

Sum satsangi: The biggest challenge for companies and startups would be to figure out how they can work with governments and solve people’s problems. Through the Government’s Digital India policy and efforts, it has become easier for companies and startups to collaborate and participate in these initiatives. From HPE’s perspective, we have worked with government organizations, policy makers, and initiatives to ensure that we are able to share our global experiences in providing diverse solutions in this space. Our portfolio of compute, storage and networking computing technologies, solutions and services hosts many innovative government services and applications. We also work with several startups associated with providing various solutions in this space providing end to end solutions.

DQ: What should be the action points for government and policy makers regarding smart governance technologies to be implemented?

Sum satsangi: India has come a long way in embracing technology for smart governance. Central and state governments have invested significantly to put in place a framework for smart governance. The Smart Cities mission was a great initiative to equip cities with the right ICT infrastructure and related solutions to address complex governance challenges. HPE has been at the forefront of deploying integrated command and control centers which have helped tremendously during the pandemic and even for other disaster management requirements. ICCCs have been designed to deploy advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and IoT to generate real-time data and information for authorities to take necessary action.

After successfully working with many government departments on their digital journey, we believe that as we move further down the digital curve, the application mix would become more complex and unpredictable. Provisioning IT resources for this ever-changing application demand would be a daunting challenge. To address this challenge, we are working on a partnership-as-a-service model which is a unique consumer-based offering from HPE. This model not only has the ability to keep the computing environment up to date with the latest technological advancements, but it is also elastic and scales with fluctuations in demand. This HPE model has matured and evolved and is used by many customers around the world for their digital journeys.

DQ: How will this transform the Indian economy?

Sum satsangi: This approach has the potential to bring about a paradigm shift in how government acquires and deploys ICT infrastructure and services. The as-a-service model brings agility to operations, which is crucial for government. The upfront savings on capital expenditure and resource sharing with other departments can virtually transform India’s local economy. This model can ideally be implemented even for small towns which can then have a multiplier effect. Collecting, storing and analyzing this data at the city level can unlock a lot of value for businesses and generate insights that can be leveraged for planning and development purposes. From HPE’s perspective, we have worked with government organizations, policy makers, and initiatives to ensure that we are able to share our global experiences in providing diverse solutions in this space.

Yale SOM recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) descent in the United States. The generic term AAPI includes a wide range of cultures from across the Asian continent – including East, Southeast and South Asia – and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia . As we honor this important month in the United States, we aim to highlight the great diversity of the Asian diaspora and explore the distinctiveness of the Asian American experience.

The Yale AAPI Legacy Celebration began in March and will continue through May. The university’s Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) – the third oldest such center – recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with the installation of a commemorative mural on the center building as a symbol of its rich history of justice. and advocacy. Learn more about the meaning of this mural, called Find the house.

SOM’s school-focused celebration aims to elevate the voices and contributions of AAPI within our community. This month on campus, our digital walls in Evans Hall will be plastered with prominent AAPI figures – a mix of historic national figures and current members of our community – as part of the “Champions of Change” campaign. ” from SOM. SOM’s Office of Inclusion and Diversity has partnered with students to compile a list of our favorite Pan-Asian authors and will provide copies of these books to the community for summer reading to further encourage the sharing stories and voices. Check out the list here.

Outreach programming is another way to honor AAPI heritage. The events focused on education and awareness to promote the sharing of cultural traditions across the Asian continent, to dispel and debunk cultural assumptions and myths, and to recognize the evil that the AAPI community uniquely faces. amid rising anti-Asian sentiment and violence.

One of SOM’s newest affinity clubs, the student-run Asian American and Pacific Islander Association (AAPIA) plays a crucial role throughout the year in helping to celebrate and increase awareness of the Asian experience at Yale. AAPIA organizes community and social events including special meals, dances and karaoke to celebrate the wealth of the Asian diaspora and also co-hosts events with other student groups and affinity clubs. Recently, members of AAPIA took to Instagram to share what their heritage and identity means to them. Check out some highlights from their Insta stories.

AAPI Heritage Month is one example of Yale SOM’s many efforts to celebrate the richness of our community. I invite you to learn more about our commitment to inclusion and diversity at SOM by visiting our Celebrating Diversity page.

As Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine in late February, Ali Plato called his sister Claudia, who lives in Romania about 30 miles from the Ukrainian border. Claudia described the plight of Ukrainians suddenly seeking refuge in Romania. Plato, a freshman in the Yale School of Management (SOM) Executive MBA program, was determined to help.

I grew up in Romania and there were a lot of Ukrainians where we lived,” Plato said. “My great-grandfather was Ukrainian and I worked for seven years in a Russian company where many of my colleagues were Ukrainian. From the start of the war, I felt compelled to find ways to help those whose lives were turned upside down by the Russian invasion.

Ella Archibald, a second-year student in the Executive MBA program, completed her medical studies in Ukraine and worked in a regional public hospital outside Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. Like Plato, she resolved to support Ukrainian refugees.

I was the medical director of the hospital,” said Archibald, who worked as a nurse practitioner at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York after arriving in the United States. “The Ukrainians I have met are very kind and hard-working people. They are ready to help others. When I saw what was happening, the horrible scenes on the news, I knew I had to help them in this moment of suffering.

At first, the two worked separately. Archibald donated money to his former hospital and reached out to students at Yale and other universities to rally support for the Ukrainian people. Plato created a website where people could donate and access information on how to help refugees. With the support of the SOM community, she raised over $20,000 in less than two weeks. Working with his sister, who was on the ground near the Romanian border, Plato directed the funds to provide supplies to refugees and help pay for transportation to other countries, including Germany, France or Great Britain. -Brittany. She also started working with a non-profit organization working in Romania to help people with disabilities who have crossed the country’s border.

Since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, about 5 million Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries and another 7 million are internally displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Plato and Archibald realized they could help more people if they worked together.

We have joined forces and expanded the scope of the mission,” said Archibald, who recently launched PinkBridge, a home healthcare delivery startup.

Together, the duo has helped over 300 people receive food, shelter, transportation and medical supplies. They were soon joined by Bart McDonough, Plato’s classmate in the Executive MBA program.

I’m here to help Ali and Ella in any way I can and to raise awareness of our program for their efforts,” said McDonough, chief executive of Agio, a New York-based company that provides IT management and cybersecurity services. to financial companies.

Sebastian Archibald, a family member of Ella who is also part of the team, sent humanitarian aid to the Polish-Ukrainian border and provided vehicles to transport refugees from eastern Ukraine, Ella explained. Sebastian, a New York-based entrepreneur, offered the group to go to Krakow, Poland, and help refugees directly.

Yale School of Management Executive MBA students Bart McDonough, Ali Platon and Ella Archibald have teamed up to provide support for Ukrainian refugees. They will travel to Krakow, Poland on April 30 to provide direct assistance to refugees and establish contact with local relief organizations.

The four will travel to Krakow on April 30 to bring money and supplies to refugees, learn about the types of assistance most needed and make contact with humanitarian organizations. The week-long trip is self-funded, but they accept donations to support the refugees. people can contribute in line.

This is a quick and targeted trip to relieve people on the Polish-Ukrainian border,” Archibald said. “People’s donations will have a direct impact. All the money we raise will go to the purchase of supplies for the refugees.

Additionally, the team launched ThePathForward.help, a digital platform that connects Yale community volunteers with refugees seeking employment in the places they have settled. Volunteers can provide career development and business advice, and help refugees write resumes, submit job applications and prepare for job interviews.

Besides money and supplies, refugees have to rebuild their lives in new countries,” said Plato, who left Romania for the United States in 2017 and works as a mergers and acquisitions consultant at the Moss Adams consultancy. based in Seattle. “They need jobs. The digital platform offers members of the Yale community a way to share their knowledge with refugees and help them get back on their feet.

The platform was created in collaboration with Nima Software, a Romanian-based company of which Plato’s good friend, Stefan Matei, is founder and owner. McDonough and Kelsey Overby, a classmate from the Executive MBA program, participated in the project. Volunteers and refugees communicate via a messaging function. The platform can translate nine languages, including English, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, and Romanian.

People sign up,” Plato said. “The platform is starting to take off.”

The team is grateful for the generous support of the SOM community.

SOM’s mission is to develop leaders for business and society,” said McDonough. “We don’t have a myopic focus on business returns; we really want to help improve society. When we see a problem, we try to fix it. Ella and Ali’s efforts to help Ukrainian refugees are an example of this. It is a remarkable community. Everyone wants to help.

Donate to support refugees at the Polish-Ukrainian border on the team’s GoFundMe page. To volunteer to help refugees find jobs, visit ThePathForward.help.

Good Tuesday! It seems like every time we listen to the architecture news, another modernist building is in danger of being wiped off the face of the earth.

So, on that nice note, here’s what you need to know today:

Architecture Lobby Announces Architecture Beyond Capitalism 2022 Summer School

Architecture advocacy organization The Architecture Lobby has announced registrations for this year’s edition of its Architecture Beyond Capitalism summer school. The planned virtual workshop will focus on reinventing studio education.

The program launched last summer as “a platform to question the structures and systems of power that have made change difficult within the design professions and institutions, as well as the belief that schools of architecture are not teaching what and how they could,” according to an e- organization email.

The message continued: “The Architecture Beyond Capitalism (ABC) 2022 workshop will take place July 18-23 via Zoom as an open platform to discuss ideas, share resources, and build a cohort interested in pedagogical practices. in the studio that better prepare architects for activism and socio-economic relevance.

New York curators pay homage to historic ‘Sip-In’ at city’s oldest gay bar

Preservation of villages and the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project dedicated a plaque to a historic NYC gay bar in recognition of its role in the LGBTQ rights movement.

Julius’, a bar on West 10th Street and Waverly Place in the West Village, was the site of a “Sip-In”, a protest where gay rights activists descended on the bar en masse, announced their orientation and asked to be served. (At the time, it was illegal for bars to openly serve LGBT customers, per New York State Liquor Authority rules.)

The plaque commemorating the event bed:

“On April 21, 1966, members of the Mattachine Society, a pioneering gay rights organization, challenged a rule that prohibited bars from serving LGBT people by hosting a ‘Sip-In’ at Julius, a bar with a large gay clientele.

Accompanied by journalists and a photographer, the activists announced that they were gay, asked to be served and were refused. This first gay rights action and the resulting publicity helped raise awareness of the widespread discrimination and harassment against LGBT people.

Cincy City planners say SOM’s Terrace Plaza Hotel shouldn’t be a landmark

The modernist Terrace Plaza Hotel, listed on Cincinnati’s National Register of Historic Places, is not worthy of a local landmark, according to a decision by the city’s planning commission Friday.

The commission voted 6 to 1 against declaring the 18-story hotel a local landmark, though the Cincinnati City Council will make the final decision on the building’s fate. A report on the building advocated the idea that windows should be cut into the solid brick facade to make the project attractive to developers. The structure has been vacant since 2008, and in 2020 it was included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual list of 11 most endangered historic places.

When it opened in 1948, the SOM-designed hotel was a “sensation”, as old A editor Sidney Franklin wrote for the Cincinnati Applicant. It “featured two restaurants and a hotel tower and featured many architectural and technological firsts. It was one of the first high-rise buildings built after World War II in the United States. It was also the first modernist hotel project in the country, and the first hotel commission” for SOM.

Work begins on LA Freeway Wildlife Crossing

Politicians were on hand for the inauguration of a long time job wildlife bridge that will keep cougars off the freeway in metro Los Angeles.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing will span the 101 in Angoura Hills, approximately 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Cougars roam an area of 150 to 200 miles, but human encroachment on their habitat has severely restricted their movements. A smaller habitat leads to all sorts of problems for felines:

“You’re stuck at the point where all you can do is hang out with your cousins”, zone Congressman Brad Sherman Told CNN. “[We’re] put mountain lions back on Tinder.

Other politicians also came up with the jokes: ‘I’m shocked to hear about a lack of food or sex in Hollywood, but for cougars, it’s true,’ said Congressman Adam Schiff .

The heavily landscaped $87 million crossing will help these endangered inbred cats, and other wildlife, cross larger areas while remaining safe from traffic. The crossing is the result of a collaboration between the National Wildlife Federation and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. CalTrans will be responsible for the construction of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2025.

“Five main questions will be discussed during this first meeting. This meeting is the first event before the meeting of G20 culture ministers in September,” Farid noted during a press briefing on Friday.

The five main issues to be discussed at the meeting, with participants including representatives from 30 countries, included the role of culture as a driver of sustainable living; the economic, environmental and social impacts of culture-based policies; and cultural community, or the co-management of cultural resources, which promote sustainable lifestyles at the local level.

The multi-storey house of BJP strongman Sangeet Som in the town of Sardhana in Meerut looked deserted. In a small room upstairs sat Sachin Khatik, scrolling through his phone.

Khatik is the leader of the Sangeet Som Sena and is among 10 people charged with assaulting and robbing a biryani vendor on April 2 for ignoring the outfit’s call to ban the sale of meat in Sardhana during Navratri festival. Saajid, the owner of the food cart, claimed that although he was selling soy biryani, the group insisted it contained meat.

The incident struck fear across the city, forcing butcher shops to close and restaurant owners to remove meats from the menu.

Said Khatik, “A day before Navratri, we submitted a memorandum that meat should not be sold. Saturday I went to the food cart and told him (Saajid) to pack it and go home. I warned him three times but he didn’t listen. Then we had to take matters into our own hands. We cannot allow anyone to vitiate the atmosphere.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, a suspected Som Sena leader was heard threatening a police officer after the incident. “I am very direct with the police. If they do their duty, I congratulate them. In this case, I told the commander (circle officer) in a manner deemed appropriate that non-vegetarian food was being sold despite our warnings. Ultimately, it’s about the atmosphere in the region.

Som, the former Sardhana MP who lost the election this time, lambasted the police for booking his supporters. “I was told that the head of Som Sena was booked by officials even when a memorandum against the sale of non-vegetarian food was given. It is clear that the police are working in cahoots and the meat has been cleared for sale,” he told The Indian Express.

Sardhana circle officer Rajendra Shahi said the police were taking action “against anyone who creates a problem in the area”. He added: “Anyone can declare their own Sena. Everything has to work within the law. The case is being investigated and there are no public order issues in the area.

Khatik, who leads a jagran mandli group that sings bhajans at religious gatherings, said he launched Som Sena in June 2016 as a Facebook page to publicize the BJP leader’s work. Now, he claimed, it has seven lakh members.

“Like many others, I was very impressed with Sangeet Som’s determination to work for Hindus. When I started the band, I didn’t know if it would be supported. But there were many like me. Today, the Sena has over seven lakh members in several states. Our philosophy is to ensure that the Hindu community is not insulted. And we are ready to take all measures for this,” added the 29-year-old, who claims to have vowed not to marry and to devote his life to the cause of Hindutva.

Most Som Sena members are between 18 and 40 years old. Khatik said while most were day laborers, some were students at local universities. The group holds a monthly meeting, but most of its daily schedule – from protecting cows to playing devotional songs in public over loudspeakers – is discussed on WhatsApp. Information about incidents that the group perceives to be anti-Hindu is then shared through local networks. The group claims to have a presence in Delhi and Uttarakhand, among other states, and an official in each district of Uttar Pradesh.

There are people in your life who can read on a milk carton and give you goosebumps, just remembering to breathe while doing so. They are the storytellers. Maurice Benard’s guest this week on his video podcast, State Of Mind, is such a storyteller. Daytime Emmy Award-winning actor and General Hospital icon Tristan Rogers shared the many roads he traveled from outback Australia to London nightclubs, before landing in Los Angeles , to land a role in a soap opera telling one of the greatest stories of the genre. all time… the love story of Luke and Laura.

Tristan Rogers: Humble Beginnings

Benard (Sonny) set the mood for the latest episode of SOM, a little different from other shows focusing on mental health issues. “It’s going to be a different mindset today. A more narrative mindset. More fun.”

And it was fun! GH co-star and friend Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio) talked about how he grew up in Australia. “I had a very good childhood. We lived, at the time, in what was then considered a pretty lousy neighborhood. Nowadays, you couldn’t get an addiction there for less than three million dollars. dollars. At the time? No.

“I was just the worst scholar you can imagine, you can write on a wall. I cracked up,” he admitted. “But, after I left school, I wandered around for about two years, basically pissing off my parents. I teamed up with this group of guys I was in school with, who basically said, ‘We’re not doing anything. What are we doing?’ I said, ‘Well. Let’s start a rock band. One guy said, ‘I can play guitar,’ another said, ‘I can play bass,’ and I said, ‘I can play drums.’ That’s how it started. After about two or three years, it became clear that we weren’t going to make any money.

“So, I started supplementing my income by doing commercial work, modeling work, commercial work in front of the camera,” Rogers explained. “I was around 21 years old. And I started making a lot of money. We had a big industry then that did that kind of stuff. It lasted a while. The group fell into oblivion. Then I decided one day that I wanted to act. Having no idea what I just said to myself. I didn’t understand what the ramifications were, the commitment you had to make. For me, it was a way to earn some money.

After an audition that took place in a hallway in front of a janitor, Rogers landed his first show, The Link. After that, there was no turning back. He ended up trying his luck in England when he met a producer he had worked with before and landed a new gig on a show called Paul Temple.

“They said it was the best episode they’d ever done. So that was my start in the industry there. And I realized one thing, ‘Tristan, you can’t go through this like that. You have to commit to it.

A mysterious man in Port Charles

A decade later, Rogers was called up for a two-day role at General Hospital. He described his early days on set. “I didn’t have a name. I was brought in, expressly, to beat the hero, Luke [Anthony Geary], then disappear. Half a day passes and I am summoned to Gloria’s [Monty] Office. And she said, ‘We really like what you’re doing. Would you like to stay?’” [His expression feigned speechlessness] And then he said, ‘Yes.’

“She said, ‘We’ll find something and talk to your agent.’ About three days later I get a call to come in. They hadn’t written anything. They had nothing for this character. I was told that Gloria wants you in scenes. You have nothing to say. You might be reading a magazine, a book, or snooping around suspiciously.

The Aussie signed for three years, which didn’t mean much back when storylines could have a shelf life of 13 weeks, but he became hugely popular very quickly as the mysterious Robert Scorpio. It wasn’t long before Gloria was considering expanding the character, even considering him a possible love interest for Laura. [Genie Francis].

During a dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel, she asked his opinion. “What do you think of Robert and Laura as an object? Two Martinis, Rogers replied honestly, “Well, I don’t think that’s going to work.” He’s a totally different character. He is older. He is more sophisticated. You’re going to have to change her before she works on changing him and the two become an item. She looked at me and it was never mentioned again.

Elizabeth Taylor and the wedding that almost didn’t happen

Rogers shared the story of how big screen legend Elizabeth Taylor (Helena) changed the landscape of General Hospital. “There really wouldn’t have been a wedding at all if Elizabeth Taylor hadn’t called and said, ‘I’m not going to appear on the show at all unless there’s a wedding. Unless that Luke and Laura don’t get married.

“What really happened after the wedding was that Genie Francis quit,” Rogers revealed. “She went to CBS to do a new primetime series. [Bare Essence]. Tony started making noise to do other projects outside of General Hospital, and Gloria had Movies of the Week lined up on ABC. So everything was in danger of breaking apart completely. Elizabeth Taylor changed all that. She put it all out there. After the wedding, Laura left. Tony didn’t leave until later.

Benard wanted to know what it was like to work with the Grande Dame. Rogers recalled his first day. “She walked into makeup and said, ‘Hi everyone. I’m Elizabeth. She came over and introduced herself to everyone. And then she said, ‘Where’s Rogers?’ and they told her I was in the booth at the end. So she came in and said, ‘Hi! Do you think we could do lines together? and I said, ‘Hell, yeah!’ She was in Gloria’s office. They’d cleared out Gloria’s office and it was her dressing room. The aquariums, all that.

The lyrical waxed actor with special details. “His eyes were purple. Her favorite flowers were Sterling roses and the whole dressing room was filled with Sterling roses. And stacked on the ceiling Dom Perignon Pink Champagne. I had never seen Dom Pérignon champagne before, but back then it was $180 a bottle, and that was in 1981. Today it’s $300 a bottle.

“About 20 minutes later, I knocked on the door and walked in. She slammed the door and said, ‘I know all about you.’ I’m going, what does that mean. She’s like, “You’re a notorious ad libber. And I said, ‘Well, yeah…’ and she pulls out the script and says, ‘What can we do? What do we do for some of these lines here? I’m not too crazy about that. So, we sat down together and rewrote his script, putting in some sharper dialogue.

More about Tristan Rogers

Every fan’s favorite Aussie from General Hospital shared many more stories with Benard. Rogers shot more of his adventures in London, including being a bartender and DJ at underground nightclubs, seeing Elton John and Kiki Dee share the stage at one of his gigs, consulting at a radio station, the moment he chose from getting serious about acting, adjusting to stardom, more behind-the-scenes stories on the set of GH, dating Elizabeth Taylor for a short time (yes, you read that right) and thoughts on her award-winning Daytime performance Emmy Award as Doc in Studio City.
