Soap Hub called the first part of Maurice Benard’s State Of Mind video podcast with longtime friend Catherine Hickland and her husband, Todd Fisher, incredible. And it was. The promise of more to come in part two did not disappoint.
Maurice Benard: state of mind
In this episode, the trio dove deep into the history of the Fisher family, from their birth as a life companion destined for Carrie Fisher to her mother’s last words. They discussed Debbie Reynolds’ many charitable accomplishments and struggles as a mother and touched on Hickland’s (Lindsay on OLTL; Tess on Loving and The City; Julie on Capital; and Courtney on Texas) overcoming her worst fear – flying – to build his career in Hollywood. on his own terms.
Todd Fisher: A Lesson in Grieving
Maurice Benard, who captivates audiences weekly on General Hospital as Sonny Corinthos, sat down with Hickland and Fisher at their Las Vegas home. Their home is essentially a museum that pays homage to a legendary Hollywood family – Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher and her younger brother [Todd], tons of entertainment memorabilia, plus Hickland’s incredible career highlights. The host and guests touched on the shadow looming in the room — the consecutive passing of Carrie on December 27, 2016, and her mother, Reynolds, the following day.
Fisher explained how he and Hickland dealt with the loss of his sister. “If we weren’t believers, and that was the end of it, you would feel awful, but if you think about the fact that she was also freed from that awful burden [mental illness]. And it’s a burden. His life has been a struggle. It was a beautiful thing, but it was also a difficult thing.
Along with her mother, the loss came as no surprise as she had suffered a stroke the previous year that the public was unaware of, so there was emotional preparation in place. He was in the room when Reynolds announced, “I have to be with Carrie,” and within minutes she closed her eyes, fell asleep, and never woke up again. He felt at peace. “It was just the most graceful exit on earth. My mother knew how to have an entrance and an exit.
Catherine Hickland: Overcoming Fear
Watching Hickland and Fisher interact, it’s clear that they support each other and share a similar philosophy on life. He admired his wife’s approach to building her acting career on her own terms.
The veteran soap star opened up about how she overcame her fear of flying to take a job as a flight attendant [now referred to as flight attendant] make a living while pursuing his goal of working in Hollywood. By chance, the airline was looking for a hostess to represent them in an advertisement [‘Fly Me’ advertising campaign]. She auditioned and won the role, earning her a spot in the Screen Actors Guild. His advice to others is, “No matter what road you take, what’s meant to happen will happen, as long as you do the work.” As long as you have your eye on the prize, it will happen if it’s meant to.
Benard, Fisher and Hickland had so much more to share about mental health and Reynolds’ many charitable contributions, including fundraising and co-founding The Thalians, a mental health facility at Cedars Sinai Hospital. Fisher opened up about growing up as one of the “three compadres,” growing up as Carrie’s younger brother, and his mother’s fierce strength in the face of adversity. Watch the gripping interview in full here.
Benard revealed how the couple helped him through one of his darkest times and how grateful he was. Part of State Of Mind’s success is Benard’s empathy for his guests. His own experiences, shared in his hit memoir Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospitalgives her a unique base from which others can share their stories and help others along the way.

Beyond the Classroom: How I’ve Applied SOM Learnings Throughout My Career | som2015.org

It’s been 21 years since I got my MBA from the Yale School of Management, where I finished with concentrations in strategy and marketing (because we had concentrations back then!). It’s been 21 years since I got my MBA from the Yale School of Management, where I finished with concentrations in strategy and marketing (because we had concentrations back then!). Since then, I’ve stayed connected to the school through meetings, judging a business case competition, and most recently through Yale’s Women on Boards executive education program.
Over the past two decades, I have applied my education to a rewarding career. After leaving SOM, I spent five years in credit card product strategy and marketing at American Express, thanks to a SOM summer internship. I then spent 10 years at Mastercard, where I developed and launched small business credit card products in the United States, Latin America and Asia.
In 2015, I left the payments industry to join a fertility company as Managing Director of Financial Services. I then moved back into payments, and in my most recent position was senior vice president of payment networks and strategic partnerships at Synchrony, a financial services company. And along the way, I learned to fly, becoming a private pilot with over 350 hours, which I’ve used to explore 12 states from the air…so far.
Of course, my SOM classes contributed to my success. But beyond that, my experiences at Yale taught me three life lessons that I have applied throughout my career:
Never stop learning: At SOM, I learned the importance of keeping an eye on the future, anticipating change and driving innovation to grow a business and beat the competition. This mindset has been crucial in product development. For example, at Mastercard, I developed various products, some of which monetized Mastercard’s vast data reserves. It was innovative and unusual in 2011, way ahead of its time. And it paid off: we grew a product suite’s revenue by 100% year-on-year.
Learning can come from many sources. When I returned to campus in 2018 with a fellow Synchrony executive and Yale alumnus to judge a SOM business competition, I was inspired by the teams’ creativity and professional presentations. And I learned by playing the role of a potential investor how to evaluate potential products and businesses from their point of view. Plus, it was rewarding to give back to the students and the school.
I also continued to learn as a pilot, not just in the sky, but lessons that translate into corporate leadership: Develop a plan, but consider possible obstacles and challenges that might mean you need of a plan B. Keep a vision in mind, but don’t forget the details. Stay focused, but aware of your surroundings and other people in them. Manage multiple activities, but know at a glance which are crucial and which are not. Keep your goal in mind, but be flexible about how to achieve it. Don’t let fear hold you back. Everything applicable in the cockpit and in leadership positions!
Say yes to new opportunities: While my MBA focused on marketing and strategy, over the past two decades I’ve worked for six different companies in multiple roles with different goals. In some cases, I jumped into new areas. But each time I made a change, I found the benefits outweighed the risks. I gained experience and expanded my expertise by immersing myself in small business products; leading the ideation, development, commercialization and launch of numerous products; and the creation of strategic partnerships with major customers to generate orders of magnitude increase in profitability. All because I said yes!
Here’s a great example: In 2015, when my career was focused on payments, I embarked on what would become one of my most rewarding experiences: leading the financial services business unit at Integremed Fertility, the most large network of fertility centers in North America. Compared to other industries, fertility can be deeply emotionally fulfilling: new parents would bring their babies to the office and we would cry together over the miracle of this new little life! So far no one has come into my office to thank me and cry over an innovative new credit card. I guess there is still time…! But beyond the emotional fulfillment, I learned how to manage a business unit, including everything from customer service to product operations to accounts payable. And I managed a P&L of $300 million. I will never regret taking on this role and the opportunities and ideas it gave me.
Stay connected and make connections for others: This is one of the many things I learned from Senior Associate Dean Jeff Sonnenfeld when I took his course in 2001, and he reinforced both of these points when he hosted the recent Women on Boards program, drawing leveraged the insights gained through its strong network to ask some of the deepest questions our country, our economy, and our world need. The Board course involved women from multiple countries, industries and backgrounds, all eager to contribute through service on boards. We learned from Jeff and other instructors and speakers, including one of my idols, Indra Nooyi ’80. The connections we made were meaningful and lasting.
Finally, while at Yale, I co-led an MBA for Women group that allowed me to build relationships and help open doors for other female students, and ignited my passion for advocacy. diversity, especially for women in the workplace. I applied that experience to Mastercard, where I founded and co-led the company’s first employee resource group, the Women’s Leadership Network. In eight years, the network has spread to several countries with more than 1,600 members. It has been an honor to play a role in connecting so many great women leaders.

the first phase of “wild mile” opens to the public
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM)joined forces with the non-profit organization Urban Rivers to build the first phase of a floatingeco-park nicknamed the “Wild Mile” on the chicago river. Composed of winding wooden walkways and lush vegetation, the 139 m² green hub serves both as a regenerative urban ecosystem reintroducing wildlife to the industrialized canal and as a public space promoting education, recreation and strengthening community ties.
Initiated in 2016 and completed in 2021, the eco-park was officially opened for use in June 2023. The next phase will see the addition of a 122-metre-long waterfront’with a series of floating gardens, forests with public walkways, kayak docks and other amenities […] designed to restore the river as a public good,’ writes SOM.
restore biodiversity, elevate social connectedness
To restore biodiversity and ecological growth to this strip of the Chicago River, the crewat Urban Rivers strategically laid out a planting design simulating a riparian ecology. Together with a specialist from the Chicago Botanic Garden, the nonprofit group included 60 native plants that thrive in aquatic environments and flora that boost pollination and nesting birds like swamp blazing star, willow America and the button.
In addition, kayak tours organized by the Shedd Aquarium help visitors learn about the regeneration processes enabled by this ecological planting program, namely reoxygenation and bioremediation.

In addition to the landscaping, the wooden walkway made by SOM (see more here) as a zigzag composition of aluminum frames and dock floats supporting wooden walkways made of Kebony, a chemically modified wood. Designed as a modular structure, the walkway will be replicated for the upcoming construction phase.
Beyond its ecological function, the ‘Wild Mile’ project has a strong social program for the Chicago community. ‘Making the most of its proximity to over 40 schools and colleges, the Wild Mile incorporates rich educational and community programming. These include a volunteer-led, technology-driven initiative, River Rangers, which recruits “citizen scientists” to document and provide regular reports on reintroduced plants and wildlife,” SOM sharing.
“Since then, the project has evolved into a collaboration with the city of Chicago, OH Community Partners, Near North Unity Program, Omni Ecosystems, TetraTechand members of the local community who make an essential contribution to its goals, objectives and priorities.

KENT v SOM, Canterbury. The South Group matches begin with Kent taking on Somerset at the St Lawrence Ground. These two teams appeared in the final of Vitality T20 Blast 2021. KENT beat SOM by 25 points. SOM will be looking to make up for the loss to KENT today. A high score match is expected today.
Kent has Darren Stevens, a versatile veteran, who is a top 5 scorer in head-to-head and site stats. On the other hand, SOM has Lewis Gregory, who plays a similar role.
The similarities continue with Tom Banton – Sam Billings, Daniel Drummond – Tom Abell and Merchant de Lange – Fred Klaassen.
Swing bowlers will be important in the initial phase of the inning. Fred Klaassen has good stats at venues but was unimpressive against SOM. Qais Ahmad has been in good form and has decent stats.

Lucknow, May 11 (KMS): Known for his controversial and communal statements and hate speech, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sangeet Som has now made an objectionable remark on Gyanvapi Mosque openly threatening to demolish the era Mughal Masjid located in the city of Benares of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
During a reception in the town of Meerut, Sangeet Som, while commenting on the Gyanvapi Mosque, said people should remember 1992 – the year when the Babri Mosque was demolished. “It was 1992 and we are in 2023. The strength of youth has doubled now and the time has come for another decision,” he said.
The hatemonger also reportedly said, “People like Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb demolished the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque. Now is the time to take back the temple.
Som, who was the biggest loser among known BJP leaders in the last UP Assembly elections, also wrote on his Facebook page that “Aurangzeb made Gyanvapi Mosque. In 1992 it was Babri and now in 2023 it is Gyanvapi’s turn. It’s time to take back the temple that was demolished to make it a mosque.
Reacting to Som’s controversial and irresponsible statement, Congress Spokesperson Surendra Rajput said, “This is exactly the BJP’s game plan to create unrest and division in society. We hope the BJP realizes the damage it is causing to the social fabric with such statements. The question of the Gyanvapi has been raised, as has that of the Taj Mahal. We are heading into dangerous times.
Senior Congress official Pramod Tiwari speaking to the media earlier said the BJP is looking for another Ayodhya issue to play politics in the Gyanvapi Masjid case. “The case is in court but I will say the state of BJP is like a wingless bird after Ayodhya verdict as they cannot fight the policy on jobs, inflation and ‘Achhe din ‘They are looking for another Ayodhya issue that they can politicize,’ the Congress leader said.

Som Satsangi, SVP and Managing Director, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, India, says technology can solve a wide range of problems and increase efficiency, which will play a greater role in governance transparency
DQ: How is HPE helping India adopt Smart Governance to streamline both governance and business practices?
Sum satsangi: HPE actively supports the Digital India and Smart Cities mission projects and partners with several PSUs to enable the digital transformation of their organizations. We are now witnessing the adoption of several digital technologies such as IoT, AI-ML, analytics, etc. at scale in smart cities and other projects and HPE provides unique, innovative and use-case specific solutions from its portfolio of hardware, IP software. as well as design, consulting and integration services.
HPE has in fact set up India’s first cloud-based integrated command and control center for Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. (BSCDCL). This center enabled the monitoring and administration of utilities and citizen services of multiple cities in each of the cities through a central cloud and enabled the monitoring of cities statewide from a view central control.
Additionally, our cloud and IoT enabled Covid testing labs and OPD centers have collectively facilitated over 5,00,000 patient visits and set a benchmark in India’s tech-enabled healthcare ecosystem. while supporting government efforts to respond to Covid.
Our High Performance Computing (HPC) systems have enabled some of the renowned institutes such as Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune; Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore; Tata Institute for Basic Research (TIFR), Mumbai; Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur). The research center with HPE HPC facilities includes the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida. HPE solutions for data, compute and applications enable several smart government initiatives.
DQ: Which technologies will play a major role in effective and transparent governance?
Sum satsangi: Technology can solve a wide range of problems and increase efficiency, which will play a greater role in transparent governance. Looking at data usage, data integration across verticals, innovative service delivery models, and cross-industry collaboration, we’ll see technologies like data, data analytics, AI-ML , high performance computing, cloud, etc., help governance to be agile. and efficient.
The Indian government has already taken steps to use digital infrastructure to solve India’s problems in delivering services without presence, paper and cash. The development of the CoWIN app, digital vaccination certificates in DigiLocker, the Aarogya Setu app are great examples. Similarly, other applications in the Indian stack such as the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) provide access to digital documents including driver’s license, vehicle registration, academic records of issuers origin and eKYC to establish their identity electronically and without paper. Therefore, the transition to emerging technologies such as the use of AI, ML, data analytics, 5G, augmented reality and the Internet of Things is already paving the way for the effectiveness and quality of governance in India.
The adoption of these technologies has already had a huge impact on smart city projects by managing traffic to reduce pollution, forecasting weather data and efficient processes as more and more people connect through devices. smart and smart workplaces. The key is to make these technologies available to every citizen of the country and to ensure effective governance.
DQ: How should companies and startups participate?
Sum satsangi: The biggest challenge for companies and startups would be to figure out how they can work with governments and solve people’s problems. Through the Government’s Digital India policy and efforts, it has become easier for companies and startups to collaborate and participate in these initiatives. From HPE’s perspective, we have worked with government organizations, policy makers, and initiatives to ensure that we are able to share our global experiences in providing diverse solutions in this space. Our portfolio of compute, storage and networking computing technologies, solutions and services hosts many innovative government services and applications. We also work with several startups associated with providing various solutions in this space providing end to end solutions.
DQ: What should be the action points for government and policy makers regarding smart governance technologies to be implemented?
Sum satsangi: India has come a long way in embracing technology for smart governance. Central and state governments have invested significantly to put in place a framework for smart governance. The Smart Cities mission was a great initiative to equip cities with the right ICT infrastructure and related solutions to address complex governance challenges. HPE has been at the forefront of deploying integrated command and control centers which have helped tremendously during the pandemic and even for other disaster management requirements. ICCCs have been designed to deploy advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and IoT to generate real-time data and information for authorities to take necessary action.
After successfully working with many government departments on their digital journey, we believe that as we move further down the digital curve, the application mix would become more complex and unpredictable. Provisioning IT resources for this ever-changing application demand would be a daunting challenge. To address this challenge, we are working on a partnership-as-a-service model which is a unique consumer-based offering from HPE. This model not only has the ability to keep the computing environment up to date with the latest technological advancements, but it is also elastic and scales with fluctuations in demand. This HPE model has matured and evolved and is used by many customers around the world for their digital journeys.
DQ: How will this transform the Indian economy?
Sum satsangi: This approach has the potential to bring about a paradigm shift in how government acquires and deploys ICT infrastructure and services. The as-a-service model brings agility to operations, which is crucial for government. The upfront savings on capital expenditure and resource sharing with other departments can virtually transform India’s local economy. This model can ideally be implemented even for small towns which can then have a multiplier effect. Collecting, storing and analyzing this data at the city level can unlock a lot of value for businesses and generate insights that can be leveraged for planning and development purposes. From HPE’s perspective, we have worked with government organizations, policy makers, and initiatives to ensure that we are able to share our global experiences in providing diverse solutions in this space.
